Birds Eye Reviews Black Bear Diner Tarzana California
At offset, the outdoor dining phenomenon began in mini-malls, where casual takeout restaurants began serving food — often in Styrofoam — to a handful of diners seated at a smattering of tables with a view of the parking lot.
That grew into larger malls, where more than upscale restaurants served meals on already existing outdoor patios. And then, to entire city streets, blocked off to traffic or at least to parking, in outdoor dining cabanas — the construction of which kept lots of carpenters well employed.
These days, there are restaurants, both upscale and downscale, that have embraced the phenomenon of dining on the street. And heart calibration as well — with restaurants like Denny'due south and IHOP rushing their chow from the kitchen to tables nether both the sun and the stars.
And, with much success, the pop Black Bear Diner on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana — where one recent Sunday the wait was worthy of a hunter, crouching downwardly to watch for bear. With food fit for a hungry conduct defining the cuisine.
Blackness Bear Diner is a fun experience, built effectually solid American cooking. It's a place to go for craven fried steak with country gravy, chicken pot pie, and pork cutlets with cinnamon apples. And it's packed with locals, happy to detect they can feed the whole family a real meal for not a lot of bucks.
It'due south a snappy concept — even if they don't call a glass of water "Domestic dog Soup," some of my favorite colorful diner lingo.
The place is filled with bear stuff — signs that read "There's no place like cave" and "Wipe your paws," along with bear defunction and bears exterior the windows. There's a small store near the entrance that sells bear trade — t-shirts, Teddy bears, comport lotion and such. There'due south a behemothic bear standing baby-sit at the archway. The only thing missing is a audio system playing "The Teddy Bear's Picnic." Information technology'due south kind of like the "Small World" theme at Disneyland.
So, there'due south the food — breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes that are divers by their familiarity, and their heft. Order Bob'southward Large Acquit Burger ("Named after our co-founder, Papa Bear Manley…") and you get two-thirds of a pound of basis beef topped with grilled onion, tomato slices, pickles, lettuce, mayo AND one thousand island dressing. With, should you lot want, thick cut smoked bacon and cheese. It's an impressive creation — the meat looks every bit if it were fresh ground past an actual person. It has that fragmented quality that beef that isn't held together with filler has — this seems to be all beef.
The burgers come with a choice of fries, white potato salad, coleslaw, green salad or whatever the soup happens to be. (I think it was broccoli-cheddar, though I might accept hallucinated that. I went with the coleslaw, which was a real hit.)
There are sundry burger variations — a California Burger (avocado and jack), a salary & cheddar burger, a Tex-Mex turkey burger (pepper jack, diced green chiles), and a Chicago Burger that comes topped with mustard and mayo, relish and pickles, onions and jalapeños. Is that Chicago? I dunno.
The card rambles from omelettes and scrambles, to sandwiches and salads (most of the salads are meat-based), to "Archetype Comfort Food" — a cornball thrill ride of meatloaf and pot roast, fish and fries plus spaghetti and meatballs, tri-tip and pork ribs. You tin can get a pretty fine feed for less than $20.
Everything on the card comes with a calorie count equally well — which, interestingly, I come across but don't meet. I don't become to restaurants to find that the fish and fries have ane,840 calories. I become to restaurants to swallow. Like most anybody else at Black Bear Diner.
